Position Overview: The Wood Shop Floor Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the wood shop floor, ensuring smooth workflow, quality control, safety adherence, and team management. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in woodworking, excellent leadership skills, and a commitment to maintaining an organized, efficient, and safe working environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervision and Leadership:
- Manage, supervise, and lead a team of carpenters, woodworkers, and other shop floor employees.
- Assign tasks and ensure work is completed efficiently and to the highest quality standards.
- Provide training and mentorship to staff, encouraging skill development and a positive work culture.
- Production Management:
- Plan and coordinate production schedules to meet deadlines and maintain workflow.
- Monitor progress on projects to ensure timely completion and compliance with customer specifications.
- Coordinate with the design and procurement teams to ensure materials are available and production requirements are met.
- Quality Control:
- Ensure that all finished products meet the company's quality standards and customer specifications.
- Conduct regular inspections of work in progress to identify and correct any issues or defects.
- Implement and monitor quality control processes to ensure continuous improvement.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Enforce safety policies and procedures to maintain a safe working environment for all employees.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and ensure all equipment is properly maintained and in good working condition.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations.
- Inventory and Equipment Management:
- Oversee inventory levels of raw materials, supplies, and tools to prevent shortages or delays in production.
- Manage the maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment, ensuring minimal downtime.
- Assist with purchasing decisions for new equipment or tools as needed.
- Reporting and Communication:
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly production reports for upper management.
- Communicate any issues or delays to management and provide solutions to resolve them.
- Work closely with other departments, such as design, sales, and customer service, to ensure smooth project flow.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience as a wood shop floor manager, production manager, or similar role in a woodworking or manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of woodworking techniques, tools, and equipment.
- Excellent leadership and team management skills.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Proficiency in relevant software tools (e.g., inventory management, scheduling software).
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing or a related field is a plus).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in woodworking or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience in a supervisory or management role.
Work Environment:
- Primarily a workshop setting with exposure to noise, dust, and machinery.
- Requires standing for long periods, lifting, and physical activity.
